Black Quartz
I found a heavy black rock; what is it?
Hardness > 6 (scratches quartz crystal)
Color - Black
Fracture/cleavage (I have not broken it) appears blocky
Streak -black (scratched with diamond)
Very weakly ferro-magnetic (using NeFeB magnet)
Density - about like Iron (not precisely measured)
Sample found in California north central sierra creek gravel.
The most likely thing it would be is basalt. Basalt can be very hard, is weakly magnetic at times, and does not always have vesicles (air holes). Another canidate is hornfels. Other answers given are possible, but unlikely.
