My Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch is running fast. Can I fix this myself?
I have the same watch (probably not exactly the same), and had the same problem.
How old is the watch? If it's fairly new, it shouldn't require any manual adjustment. If you've had it for, say, years, you may want to take it to a jeweler to have it serviced. Usually it's just a matter of them either changing the oils/lubricants, or manually adjusting the winding mechanism.
I have an older model, and having it serviced worked like a charm. Occasionally it still gains some time -- what I do is I lay the watch in a vertical position, crown down, as this position will shave some extra seconds off during the night. If you lay it flat, face up, it will be more likely to gain time.
The most important thing to do is make sure the watch is cleaned regularly. That will make a HUGE difference. You may also want to consider purchasing a watch winder (a device which holds a watch and rotates it in a circular pattern to mimic the necessary parts of human motion to operate the self-winding mechanism).
Here's something else you can do to see if the watch is maintaining it's "power reserve" (the number of hours it should run after being fully wound up). Wind it 30-40 times, then leave it on a table until it stops entirely. If it takes about 40-44 hours, give or take, it should be fine.
The general rule is: If the watch is gaining or losing time within a 24 hour period, it probably needs adjustment. Definitely talk to a jeweler at some point, even if it's just for information.
EDIT: The night before last, I set my watch down flat, face up before bed. The following morning, it was fast by 12 minutes. Last night, I set it down vertically, crown down, and it was 2 minutes fast. Play around with the positioning of the watch, and definitely look into buying a watch winder.
