In the russian novel "Night Watch", what exactly was the treaty Anton made with the day watch that saved him?
I didn't quite understand what the treaty was, in what way did both the Day watch and Night watch risk their "pawns"?
I read the original Russian book and I guess some details and subplots could be lost in the English translation.
Anton had a VERBAL AGREEMENT with the Day Watch, which had dramatic consequences. The reason for this agreement was a minor offence that Anton committed. When he was trying to catch up with Yegor (at the beginning of the story) in the underground station, some street vendors kept offering him cheap goods, slowing him down. In his frustration, Anton used a very light "remoralisation" spell on the vendor, which could make him consider finding a more decent job. INFLUENCING HUMANS is considered an offence by both Night and Day Watch, although if the influence is as minor as this it's normally overlooked.
Unfortunately, Anton was spotted by a couple of Others from the Day Watch (one of them was Alice Donnikova) when he was "remoralising" the vendor. They chose not to report him for the offence but instead made a verbal agreement that Alice was entitled to perform a similar intervention ("of the 7th degree") if she needed to. Anton was happy with that, as he thought that such a small intervention couldn't possibly have any considerable effect on anyone.
However, this agreement wasn't accidental, in fact it was carefully planned by Zavulon and used by him later. When Yegor turned out to be an uninitiated Other and had to decide whether to join Night Watch or Day Watch, Alice used her right to perform an intervention of the 7th degree. She used it on Anton, making him tell about all the dirty games that both Zavulon and Geser were playing, pursuing their own goals and often sacrificing "pawns" (e.g. a young vampire) in the process. This made Yegor to become inclined towards the Dark side, as at least the Day Watch were truthful about their intentions, whereas the Night Watch played dirty as well but pretended to have a worthy cause for that.
The other "PAWNS" that were eventually sacrificed were Alice and Anton. Alice was punished and sent away (in the second part of the first book I think) and Anton was banned of using any magical powers for a long time. The were both wrong to make that verbal agreement in the first place. They thought they were just making a small compromise by "settling a minor offence", but in fact it was all part of a big game they weren't aware of.
In the FILM, the story of the verbal agreement was left out. Instead, at the end of the film Alice told Yegor that Anton once wanted to kill him (when he was an unborn baby). Although Anton tried to explain that he was confused and didn't know that the baby was his own son, this story still discredited the Night Watch in Yegor's eyes and made him want to choose the Dark side.
The plot of the novel is quite complicated but I hope my explanation helped a bit!
