Can anyone give me a summary of Guns, Germs, and Steel, by Jared Diamond?

I have to give an hour long seminar on the book. Yikes!

It would be nearly impossible to summarize the book here - too much material to be neatly summarized. BookRags.com has a great study guide, but it isn't free. You can buy a pass for just one book and it isn't expensive.

That is the best advice I can give beyond doing your own outline of the book. That would be the best thing for you.

Engraving can be applied on almost any surface or material e.g. silver, gold, steel, glass, cooper & plastic plus many other materials and metals.Engraving passé can take on a number of different forms including illustration, writing & numerous.

Traditional engraving, by Burin or by machine is still used today, but with the addition of techniques such as photoengraving & laser.In the past engravers were famous and would produce what can only be described as works of art, this was done using many different techniques which are still enjoyed today.

Today engraving machines such as the K500 or K6 use a diamond stylus to cut cells, the K6 has 18 engraving heads each able to cut 8,000 cell per second with an accuracy of 1um. Both machines are controlled by computer.

Laser engraving machines are becoming the new tool, but mechanical cutting still has been proven as the best in economical terms & quality.Laser engraving using lasers to engrave or mark an object is a skilled, technical and complex technique. A computer more often than not is programmed to drive the laser head, creating very precise and clean engraving at an extremely high speed, there are no tool bits touching the surface, thus no wearing out, this is a great advantage as other technique's have to have bit head s replaced regularly.With a Laser engraving machines there are three major components, a laser, a controller & a surface. The laser itself is like a pencil - a beam is released and allows the controller to trace patterns onto a surface. The controller, normally a computer controls the direction, depth, speed & spread of the laser beam.

There are three genres of engraving machines, the X –Y table where the material is stationary and the laser moves round in X & Y direction, also the laser can be stationary and the material moves.

The Cylindrical or flat material mounted around a cylinder where the laser traverses a fine helix and on/off laser pulsing creates the desired image on a raster basis.

Lastly both material and laser are stationary and galvo mirrors move the laser beam over the material surface.Material that can be engraved using laser are vast to give an example: Most hard wood and soft wood (not Fur) latex and rubber compounds, plastic's, acrylic, styrene (cd cases) Bakelite, light switch plates.Laser engraving is now also widely used in jewellery making as it can cut both flat and curved surfaces. Stone and Glass is better suited to different forms such as sandblasting, diamond and water. With glass this is due to the surface fracturing, but using a laser successfully can be achieved as long as the power, speed and focus are just right.
